Responsibilities & Duties:

Assisting Weatherford’s intellectual property attorneys and serving as a primary “focal point” to address the intellectual property concerns of assigned business units and product lines.

Actively encouraging the submission of new invention disclosures by Weatherford engineers and scientists, such as by sitting in on project design reviews, and planning and chairing “brain-storming” sessions for the development of broad patentable concepts.

Preparing for and hosting patent committee meetings (PCMs).  This includes distributing to all participants, before the PCMs, copies of the invention disclosures to be reviewed , making patent filing recommendations, preparing supporting documentation for decisions on patent annuity payments and maintenance fee payments, preparing documents for decisions regarding the filing of related domestic and international patents, keeping minutes, and completing the actions that are decided by the committee.

Promptly directing invention disclosures to outside counsel for drafting of patent applications.  Ensuring that all applications are reviewed by the inventors prior to filing, and facilitating communication between the outside counsel and the inventors.  Ensuring that final drafts are reviewed by the responsible Weatherford Patent Attorney prior to filing. 

Assisting outside counsel, as needed, in the preparation of responses to Office Actions from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and Foreign Patent Offices.

Extensively using and reviewing data in the Weatherford Patent Database (Foundation IP).

Maintaining relevant files on all patent applications and invention disclosures.

Monitoring issued patents for possible infringement.

Assisting Weatherford’s Patent Attorneys in ensuring that management’s prior approval is obtained and appropriate agreements are in place (1) before Weatherford’s technology is disclosed to others and (2) before outside technology is brought into Weatherford.

Reviewing Engineering projects as part of the Weatherford Engineering Project Management Process to identify any potential patentable ideas and any possible concerns with third party intellectual property rights.

Assisting the Weatherford Legal Dept. and outside attorneys as needed for patent litigation activities.

Supporting Product Line & Engineering Vice Presidents and Management regarding intellectual property concerns through strategic planning.

Understanding and complying with all safety rules and company policies of Weatherford.

Performing work assignments at the highest quality level.

Performing various other duties and activities as assigned by supervisor within the physical constraints of the job.

Assisting with intellectual property training courses for engineers and scientists.

Knowing and understanding Weatherford’s Enterprise Excellence Program and the Quality Policy, and complying with all requirements of the Quality Systems Manual, Operating and Technical Procedures and Workplace Instructions.



BS degree in Engineering

Min 5 years of applicable engineering experience

Understand basic fundamentals of the patent application process.

Understand basic fundamentals of how patents impact our business.



5 to 10 years of applicable engineering experience

Comprehensive knowledge of patent application requirements.

Knowledge of patent prosecution methodologies and strategies applicable to the United States and overseas (particularly Europe and Canada).

Capability to interpret the scope of patent claims.

Capability to interpret patent prosecution histories
